You didn't mention what the ambient temperature is, but since I doubt anyone uses their 8 when it's snowing, I'll assume it's over 0 Celsius.

The BMW manual advises against letting the car idle. You'll have more carbon build up, more wear as the rpm is lower and you are wasting fuel. I always start, put on my belt and go. So idling maybe 15 sec should do it for it for the oil pressure and lube. Just be nice to the engine for the first 15min, don't rev beyond 2000rpm and wait for the temperature gauge to go a little past the blue before increasing the rpm. Wait for the thermostat to kick in and open the coolant in the radiator before really driving the car. Remember is the oil temp that is important here, not the water. The oil takes much longer to heat up.
