Hi!
Well this is an interesting subject(part of what I'm working with).
The GSM interferance can cause the airbag to 'blow up in your face' in both Saab and Volvo systems according to tests made. So they have both warned people of using their phones in the car. The recommendation is to use an external antenna instead, to get the 'field' on the outside of the car. I have never heard of it actually happening, but there is a known risk. Nowadays tests are made to ensure the functionality of all systems with respect to all kinds of thansmitters in the cars, but in the 'early days' it was different..
If we take a -91 BMW, and let's say they developed that year model in -89, how common was the GSM at that time..?
Now having said this, I never had a problem using my mobile phone in my 850i.
However I think it can be the problem in your case. All cars are 'individuals' when it comes to EMC-problems, depending on harness variations and so on. Could also depend on the distance to the closest 'base antenna' for the phone. The output power of the phone i varying with signal strength/distance to the 'base'(max 2W).
There is usually an integrity check made of the system at startup (ing. on), and if your cellphone is sending during this check, it could fail.
No real answer to the problem, just some background.

Sam
