The other day I had my '96 840Ci detailed, including the engine compartment. On the way home, in 5:00pm traffic the alert chime goes off, I glance at the display and see "Engine oil pressure low". I start making rapid lane changes to try to get across a couple of lanes of heavy traffic to get to the side of the road and the display goes back to normal. About this time the panic subsides enough for me to realize that it may be a cleaning related electrical issue rather than a real engine problem. Ever since my 2002 days the one area that BMW always seemed to overengineer was the oil supply so it seemed that I was probably OK. I gingerly drove the remaining mile or so home.

I called the dealer and started to explain the situation. As soon as I said engine detailing the service advisor interupted me with a chuckle and said "don't worry, you're not out of oil...". Apparently this is a common problem. He indicated that if it didn't dry out and start behaving itself in a day or two they would replace the sensor.

Anyone else ever run into this one?
