Thank you Lez for your feedback and quick response...take care...John

Hello All...

I am looking to purchase an 840ci and had a few questions I wanted to post to this forum.

1. What are the differences between the 4.0 liter V8 & 4.4 liter V8 engines in regards to Horse Power & Torque, if any?
* I had both '95 840Ci and '97 840Ci feels a same at high speed but at lower rpm the 4.4i feels stronger. The steptronic made a lot of difference in driving style *

2. What year did BMW have the 4.4-liter V8 engine offered? end of 95 as 96 modell year

3. What year did BMW have the side turn signal lights (that are mounted just behind the front wheels on the quarter panel, in the black strip) was it 96? 97? * well I would think at least '95 because my '95 had those on *

4. Was the standard manual transmission ever a big hit with the 840ci? I ask since a lot of used 840ci’s have automatic (cringe) transmission. Was the manual never an option or just for the 850Csi? * yes it was but not in the states where the 840Ci was available with auto trans. only. In EU the 840Ci was 0.5s quicker and 5km/h faster with manual *

5. Did BMW ever produce a silver 840Ci with a black or red interior? The silver 840ci I have seen have a gray interior. Just wondering.
* never seen a red interior but black definietly, most of the silver is with black in EU. *

6. Also, if the 840ci is not a pre-certified BMW what options, if any, does one have to purchase an extended warranty package?
* no idea on that one *

7. If the V8 is a Nikasil engine, and the car is past its 6 years or 100,000 miles warranty, should that be a "price" point? Meaning, talking to the seller about the price to replace the egnine and subtracting it from the selling price. (refernced www.koalamotorsport.com/v8shortblock.htm)

if you have a non-warranty nikasil problem then it could cost you a great amount of money... at least 4000USD if not more then that... I'd keep myself away from a Nikasil block vehicle unless tested ...

one more typical 840Ci problem - rought idle - most of the time it is leaking valve cover/intake gasket but the faulty converter also caused same problems.
Converter is about 400/each + O2 sensor (100/each) , need 2 from both (non BMW)
intake gasket replacement around $450.00

check the front suspension and tires they can give you a hint about suspension trouble

Transmission should shift smoothly but there was a problem with harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifting in the 94-95 modells. Easy fix, around 170USD

The 840Ci feels a bit lighter then an 850i and not as torque but not a whole lot slower. I raced against a 850Ci and was slower by a small margin.
both very good and reliable cars in their on way...
