Mike:

We feel your pain. My personal condolonces to you.

What state/area do you live in? That might help us giving you precise advice. (For example, California-based residents have different experiences with dealers than Colorado residents do).

See my answers to your questions below:

Will it get "Totalled" by my insurance co.?
- it depends...the axle/suspension damage could be astronomical to fix due to its uniqueness; Kurt's mentioned of the blue book is key here. My insurance company, Amica, goes above blue book as well.

If it is "Totalled", how do I keep from getting screwed on the retail value?
- good question. In the event this comes up, I would be prepared to present evidence that it's worth more (e.g. pix, service history, market rates for excellently maintained 850ia's (Autotrader, Dupont Registry), your original bill of sale, etc.

Range of repair cost (ball-park guess), if not totalled?
- IMHO, approximately $15K

If I want to keep it (YES), what is my best play with my insurance co.?
- Be honest, self-assured, and prepared with documentation.

How should I play the adjuster?
Depending in on the auto insurance company...if it's a 'company' adjuster, they'll probably be less tough than one that is on contract (except Amica, where all claims adjusters are contracted, but they're fair). Those on contract are policed to be within certain guidelines. (anyone else have insight here?)

Where should the car be when he looks at it? BMW Dealer, High-end body shop, or does it matter?
- High-end body shop that has done at least three or four 850's before.

If it is "Totalled", do I want to buy back the wreck?
- Kurt's right. It's a valid consideration, since the car parts alone are worth a lot of $$. If you can do it, then go for it.
