The chip is already installed. I bought it that way. I only found out when looking under the hood and found a label from Dinan. Using the great info from here, I found where the chip is, and sure enough, the original was replaced.

I'm the third (as last!) owner, but 2 different dealers have serviced the car, one in manhattan and one in NJ. Neither was forthcoming on anything they may have done to the car. It took a call to BMWNA just to get the service records.

Just wanted to learn more about the chip itself (as far as what it does to the car).
