I would assume that you have Not filed a police report.

Under California law you have to do so if the damage was greater than $500. Since it was greater allow the police to do their work.


Steve is right. If it happened on the freeway, go to the nearest CHP office and file a counter report. All they need is the license plate, but give them a copy of everything you have. Don't give them the originals without making a copy for yourself. If it happened on a street, find the nearest police department and file the report. You have plenty for them to go on.
