sure, they are ugly mirrors, but have you seen the original M1 Proracer ? The M1 was not supposed to be a street car more of a concept vehicle... and racecar. The production started when the rules has changed, they had to sell 400pieces of the model in order to compete... by the time BMW had sold the 400 M1's the car was outdated already.
First M car and success in a way that most concept car and racecar street version can only dream of. The M1 is basically 10 years older then the CSI (by design) which easily shows the amazing technology and style changes in the 80's. The 8 series was designed in the late 80's while the M1 was designed in the late 70's.
Yes the M1 looks old and dated but still a nice vehicle. The value of the M1 is well over the 850CSI (cca. 80k USD) and very hard to find. I know 2 or 3 for sale and they are all demand more then 80k USD. The car itself is good, but can be modified to much better. The European Car magazine feautered a modified M1 for street use with the Proracer kit and stronger engine and better brakes, etc. The M5 engine is similar so a lot of upgrade from those cars can be done...
I'd love to own both and keep them for 30 years... The M1 will be 50 y/o and a CSI desing will be 40 y/o but what a difference....
