I faced the same problem when replacing the 235/50 x 16 rubber on my 1991 850i. The selection of tires available in the 235/50 x 16 size is VERY limited. So I decided to install 245/50 x 16. IMHO, this is the best tire size if you're going to retain the stock wheels. As noted above, compared to the 235/50 the circumference is slightly larger, so the revs per mile decrease by roughly 1.6 percent. I haven't had any noticeable spedometer or odometer error. Nor have I had any trouble with black box that controls ASC or anything like that. OBC calculations remain unaffected as well. Handling is unchanged and there are no clearance problems.
Best off all, I was able to purchase Z-rated Michelin rubber frm Tire Rack for about $165 per tire. The 50-series tires are definitely less expensive than the lower-profile ruber.
