I've just been through a similar code and situation as the one you describe, and I'll relate what we did. Around labor day, drove home in very rainy conditions. Next morning, just as motor comes out of warm up routine, it goes in to 6cyl limp-home, followed a few seconds later by transmission going in to it's limp home. Now, that's a treat! Eventually stopped, restarted, and things cleared up temporarily. Engine would now go into its 1500rpm limit(but run on all 12) limp home mode. Fortunately, I have the free services of one of, if not the best, independant BMW mechanics in the area(St. Louis, MO). It took us a couple of weeks to get together, but finally we did a couple of days of troubleshooting. Oh, gas pedal codes were 1234, and 2235(?). I think the 2235 is an aberration, and it really wants to say 2234, which mine finally did. Codes removed by mechanic with his Baum diagnostic tool were 63 and 73. 63 could have been an old code, but we got a consistant 73. We poked, prodded, piddled, and consumed mass quantities of a fine local malt beverage, but really couldn't pin it down. However, we did unplug and replug a bunch of connectors on a whole lot of stuff under the hood and dashboard. We needed another 850 to compare to.As I was leaving his shop, the car ran fine for about 5 miles, then went in to the now familiar 1500rpm limit mode, which lasted all the way home. Next day, I made an appointment with the best dealer in the area, to get the benefit of their DIS(?) machine, and I also made sure the mechanic was THE MAN on the 850's. Couldn't get in for about a week and a half, and did not drive car hardly at all. Was going to drive around until eml did its thing, then go to dealer. Of course, when the day came, for the first time in a month, the eml would NOT fail, no matter what I did. Took it in anyway, they said the eml looks at several things to make sure the DK motors are doing their thing correctly, and one of the motors was feeding back a false signal. They recommended replacing the DK motor in question, and then if the fault came back, replace the vehicle speed sensor in the rearend. They didn't know much more than we did. Charge was roughly $1300 for the motor and labor. I said no thanks, can get the motor for $613+shipping, can change it myself, and here's your $109 for diagnostic time. Car has only 36K miles on it, and I didn't think it was time for a DK motor to fail yet. Bottom line... the car has been perfect since, but I'll be damned if I drive it the rain again! Good luck.
