Bert and Carl,
If the batteries were up and the car was working properly with juice showing at the post for jump-starting, then if a good external battery is hooked up there it has to work. However, it sounds like Bert shut off the system before hooking up the third battery....or the third battery went dead while doing it's job of keeping the system up and running. Now when Bert tries to hook up the system to the rested batteries they won't turn the car over. ????? Have I missed something here?? Perhaps the normal in the car batteries lost their charge?? or burned out being over charged?? If you saying that your car won't show any amperage at all no matter what charger is hooked up, then it must be a fuse or a relay or something in the line burned out causing the line to loose it's continuity. Too bad we have to communicate with words here, so often too easy to misunderstand.
But, I'm with Carl, I truly don't know exactly what the problem is. :-)
Sorry, Kurt

Hi Bert

I'm a little confused of what your battery issue is , but you should be able to charge your batteries using the connection in the engine compartment. The clue is of course is that you need a charger that can supply twice the Amps as normal, since it's going to two batteries. Charging at 10 amps would mean 5 to each battery. Measuring a voltage is not an indication that your batteries are good. You can still measure 12-13 volts on a basically dead battery. The voltage is there, but the ability do deliver and Amps are gone. If you store the car in a cold environment, you might consider removing the batteries from the car, as this would conserve your batteries. Then add a external battery as you do, to preserve you settings.

Regards
Carl
