Hey James,
An amazing result to me was when I made a trip from Sacramento to San diego about 3 months ago in my CalypsoRed 91 850i with (at the time)about 73000mi. I changed the oil just before I left, 20/50 Castrol synthetic combination, and drove to San Diego stopping many places inbetween trying to take advance of road trips with corners and straightaways where I could open it up etc. and I drove it fairly hard. During the trip I checked the oil often, didn't use any!, then after arriving in San Diego some 1500 mi later with side trips, the oil had not gone down on the dip stick. I was and still am truly amazed!
Kurt

My 1993 with 90K miles consumes less than 1 quart every 3K miles.
I never have to add oil, usually just change the oil and fill it to the top of the stick. After 3K it is near the bottom of the stick and I change it.
The harder you drive the car, the more oil it will consume.
Anything up to 1 quart per 1K miles is generaly considered acceptable (but maybe not by E31 owners!)
Those owners claiming not to use ANY oil at all just are not noticing because they change it before it gets low.
Try driving your 850 until all the green lights go out and you will see some measurable consumption!
I doubt any 850 owner on this board would wait that long.
