I had a 95 840CI and production date was 9/94. I was also concerned about the nikasil problems, so I did a research on it. I called BMW tech and they told me the followings :
- all V8 BMW was made with Nikasil since 6/93 till 7/95. Even if they replaced the engine block in between those dates, they are also nikasil blocks. The BMW made the change in mid 95 from 4.0l to 4.4l and from nikasil to alusil. The reason for the size increasement wasn't the nikasil problem. All the replacement block is made out of alusil now for the 4.0l as well as 4.4l The reason for the size increase was the OBDII system which takes some HP away. They wanted to keep the HP same and this needed a 7% size increasement. The 325 became 328, M3 engine grow from 3.0 to 3.2l, 4.0l V8 became 4.4l and 5.0l V12 became 5.4l . On some case they were able to gain a few HP (325, M3, V12) but on the V8 they only gained a few lbs/ft torque.
if you ask for a replacement 4.0l block they won't give you 4.4l just a 4.0l alusil block. Besides they stroked the engine not just bored out.. different rods
