Incredible car. Lousy manuals. Doesn't make sense to me how such a technically advance company can produce such a terrible product as the manuals. Mark's comments are ... right on the mark!!
I also have the parts CD that I am keeping as a backup just in case there are concurrent catastrpohes in the Bay Area as well as sevral other regions in the world. The CD is complete, but is a nightmare to navigate through. I have an extensive computer background, can write code myself and also build websites. Again, BMW can do better than this. You almost need to take a course on the ETK to run the damn thing.

I, too, have both of these factory manuals, and both of them are pretty lame compared to good ole Ford and GM manuals. I can't seem to recall any instance where any fits or tolerances are called out, or any selective shims or bushings are noted, etc. Someone should bring suit to BMW for having the word "Troubleshooting" in the title of the electrical manual. IMHO, both of these manuals were published soley to prevent an independant from working on these cars, or more likely, to satisfy a legal requirement somewhere. An expensive factory manual should provide enough information for good ole Gervis to rebuild, no, blueprint the engine, transmission and rear end to better than factory specs. I know some will say that BMW, in their all-knowing wisdom, is protecting us from ourselves, or the info is too 'technical' to release to the general public, but that is a load of bullscheiss, mein friends.
