I guess the whole lesson here is to do one's research because the dealer will not go the extra inch unless goaded by a customer's knowledge.
Maybe it is a fault in the way the service departments are set up? The reps and the mechanics who actually do the work are two separate sets of people. It could one does not always know what the other is doing.
Recently I took my 94 850Ci to the stealers to have a new spare key programmed. When they'd finished, the service advisor said that they had noticed that the OBD reported a front fog light failure and they had checked it out and would forward me a quotation to correct the problem.
True, the failure had been showing up every time a started the car for the last couple of weeks, but the fog light itself was working.
I received a quotation for $700 + labour to renew an electrical module which apperently was broken.
Reading previous posts on the board I thought I'd better check out the electrical connections to the light. Sure enough, the spade connector to the fog lamp was loose, a quick pinch with the pliers and I have never seen the message again.
I informed the service advisor afterwards and he just looked blank.
What if I had told them to replace the unit? would I still have the same problem but be $700 lighter? Would they have realised when the new unit was fitted, and then carried out the correct repair but still charged me $700.
I should mention that where I am living, there is only around 10 8 series in the country. Therfore all non standard spares have to be shipped in specially from Germany. I doubt therefore they would have shipped the part in, admitted to their mistake and sent the part back.
