EML and DK replacement question (archive)

On cold starts the last couple of days the EML light is coming on and no power. Warms up a little - turn car off and back on and no EML light and full power. Dealer says DK motor is to blame; do both motors need to be replaced at the same time or can they just do one - dealer says one is ok. What else do they need to be on the lookout for?

Side note the OBC tells me about 80% of the time that my license plate light is out even though it's not, any relationship - I was thinking maybe a battery problem?

it's a stock '91 850 with 45k, 30k of which has been in the last 2.5 years...good thing I've got that extended warranty...
