Hi Tom,

Since the starter actually whines but does not engage it is not a solenoid problem. Most likely a "Bendix" spring issue.

Your friend might be on the correct path if it was a 4 or maybe a 6 cylinder engine in which the engine stops in the same position a majority of the the time. The ring gear on the flywheel can become worn where the starter engages.

Regardless, of what it is I would push to get it rectified under warrenty as it is an expensive repair due to the location of the starter. The exhaust intermediate pipes haveto come out... not an easy job. To replace the starter is probably a 4 hour or more job if the mechanic knows what he is doing.

I just finsihed a rather major repair on my 850i. A head gasket went south and so i decided to do a bit of preventive maintenance while it was apart. Valve job, guides/seals, and found that the bolts hold ing the cooling gallery cover where frozen and the gasket was leaking coolant. But enough of that. We replaced the starter with a brand new one in order to avoid the labor later on shou;ld the starter fail. Well, guess what? engine all together car running superbly. Starter solenoid failed. mechanic was VERY unhappy. He had to do what we were trying to avoid.

Good Luck,
Steve Cohen

I am stationed in Bamberg Germany and own a 93 850 CSI with approximately 60,000 miles on it. Recently I have had minor problems starting the car, but the problem is not consistent. The car is still under the BMW Europe plus warranty but I can't replicate the problem when I take the car to the local BMW repair shop. Has any owner of an 850 come across this problem: once in a blue moon (after 20-35 successful starts) the starts seems to miss starting the engine. The start spins, whines, but doesn't engage. Then the on the next attempt, the engine fires. In the last 6 months this has happen about 4 times. A friend of mine suggest it could be the flywheel. I have no idea and would like it fixed before I return to stateside duty. Would appreciate any advice,
thanks
