The dealer won't even do it... They'll stamp your books to prove that there was a speedo change, but if your speedo goes south and you need a replacement, you'll be starting again at 000000. Same problem goes for Euro Imports, new cluster=new mileage... Resetting the mileage is possible however as you stated, and is a big problem in Europe. I've seen it done with a Laptop, and any value can be entered. This does trip a fault that "can't" be erased to tell a technician that the mileage has been altered. The good at time-tested advice to buy a car with a verifiable history is still true...:)
