I seem to recall from reading an old owners manual, or somewhere, that the ASC only activated the brakes as a last resort to achieve its goal -- before that, it would electronically throttle back, without regard to the input provided by your foot. I've proved this to myself in my 740il by stopping on ice in the winter, and then flooring the throttle. After a slight spin, the RPM's just drop to near idle, until the car was off the ice. I don't know how this throttle manipulation would affect mileage, but I certainly can understand how it would affect performance. I don't know what the threshold is for the light to flash, but conceivably the ASC could very well be doing its thing more frequently than one realizes.
Hello All,

I was cruising around town today, when I decided to try driving without the ASC. Maybe it was psychological, but my E31 felt like it was somehow more liberated, less reserved and proper, and more alive. Acceleration felt faster, engine response much more "peppy" (for lack of a more technical term).. hmmm! interesting!

This got me to thinking: If ASC applies brakes for the driver when it thinks brakes are needed to stabilize the car a bit, would this affect fuel economy adversely if I drive with it on at all times? What if the ASC is overprotective and brakes more than it should, not allowing the car to maximize fuel usage?

I wonder if ASC+T usage yields less power from the car...

Maybe I'm going off the deep end here... any thoughts?

BTW, I visited the LA Auto Show today, and it seems like a few companies haven't even received all of their displays yet. Lexus won't have their new SC430 on display until Tuesday, and BMW's Z9 was nowhere to be seen today. Maybe I'll go again later in the week.

Richard
