As far as car washes go, I have a membership at a handwash place in Newport Beach. They do as good a job as I would do myself. Unlimited washes on both of my cars for $100/mo. It's a pretty good deal when the mid-line wash is $15 a pop. It's pretty funny to go there at 8am and see all of the black cars there each morning!!
I feel bad for the Northern California guys in the Bay Area. I spent a year there and there was just too much rain for me. On top of that, I could never find a good car wash at a reasonable price. The best place I found was in Walnut Creek and they charged $19.95 for a hand-wash and it still looked like crap.
I have lived as well as been to a lot of places in the US. Seems that as a whole, people in the LA area have the biggest love affair with their cars. Then again, it is easier to keep them because of weather and so on. I just got back from the East Coast in the Baltimore/DC area and didn't see an 8 the whole time I was there, and it is a pretty affluent area. The mentality there is different towards a car. Transportation, that's it. A car wash is like a maintenence thing. You have to do it in the middle of winter to keep the salt out of the wheelwells and off the body rather than for appearence.
Just my 2 cents.....

it doesn't really snow much here either but we usually have a very wet summer and spring. But lately it hasn't been rained since oktober so we have water restriction. No car wash but every 3rd day between 4:00AM-8:00AM that means total restriction for me, since I'm not going to get up and wash my car at 7:00AM. I'm crazy but not that crazy !
