Jim,
I have the same. It is an immobilizer and I think the brand is "Serpi Star". In my car however it is extended with/part of a full alarm system, including a remote control. So although I can switch it on/off with a stick (like you do), I use a remote control that activates and deactivates all components of the alarm system. So instead of removing the demobiliser, you can also think of extending the alarm system so that it handles easier. If you want more detail, let me know.
