It's called a door brake and it seems to be an item that frequently fails on the 8 series. I had one of mine replaced in the last year - the parts were about CDN $90 and the labor was about 1.5 hours.

Cheers Derek i asked around and i can get a new one for £20 about $30 & £70 labour. The shop here call it a "door check".I might fix it myself but i don't want to damage the door trim,Do you know anywhere that might have the procedure layed out.Thanks Mike.
