Agreed, the $35 tool is reasonable for two metal pins embedded in a 5 cent piece of plastic. The wire-jumper procedure was originally posted for someone considering one of the overpriced $150-200 tools (given the simplicity of its function).

Also, as Guy pointed out, the correct jump sequence should be ammended to ignition position #2 (dash lights on), not #1 as previously posted.

The wire procedure is dirt simple, however, not recommended for those unfamiliar with the BMW service connector, its pin locations, etc., as damage can easily occur to the ignition sytem.

I bought one and for $35.00, it takes the guesswork out of the job.

I think anyone that can afford an E31, should be able to swing $35.00 rathher than play shadetree mechanic and jump wires into the connector.
