A dealership mechanic and an independent BMW mechanic both described using the fine adjustment dial or wheel in front of and below the leading edge of the glass lens to adjust the lens up. Then loosen the 17mm lock nuts on the corners of the flip up light bucket, and adjust the 5 or 6mm allen bolt to set the bucket flush with the hood opening when hood is down and buckets are retracted.
Well, the fine adjustment wheel does not raise the beam enough. Resetting the corner adjustments to raise the beam means the bucket would protrude above the hood opening and not sit flush. The '91 shop manual shows a gross adjustment screw behind the front lens cover that can be removed by first removing the retaining clips. But on my '95, this is a sealed unit and cannot be removed. The only remedy seems to be to remove and disassemble the entire bucket to make the adjustment--what looks to be a really big job. The independent BMW mechanic laughed, actually guffawed, from his past experiences with these cars telling me the adjustment could not practically be made, that most of these cars have low beams aimed to low, and the only practical fix is to have the bucket sitting high in the hood opening. This is not acceptable to me.
Please help with advice on the easiest and best procedure to
properly aim my low beams. Thanks for any help.
