To us e31 guys, replacing a $30 dollar part just as a matter of course in the process of elimination is not the normal way of thinking for owners of other models. Before I had my intake gaskets replaced, I tried to get my shop to replace those temperature sensors. The response that I got from two different shops was that they so rarely ever go bad, that they are probably okay. I think that shops are usually dealing with people who are in over-their-heads financially on maintaining a 4-cyl engine that they don't want to add what they think is unecessary cost. When I replaced my heater valve last September, I found that the sensors are easily accessible for service when you remove the air box that holds the microfilters.
