Another potential route to take is to find a rack from another model of BMW that uses the same "mandible" type roof attachment system. In looking closely at mine, the rails are just an aluminum channel section that can be modified in length. In other words, if you can find the four attachment assemblies and a set of rails that are the right length or maybe too long, you can adjust the length (width with respect to the roof) using a hacksaw. The ends of the rails are hidden within the mounting assemblies, so the ends of the aluminum rails wouldn't look trashy where you cut them. The fittments seem to be standard across the BMW model line, so reverse logic dictates that the channel sections are standard also. If you look at the picture, the black trim across the top is just a grooved trim piece, so the channel has a slot the width of that black piece the entire length of the rails. Once you attach the fittments, you slide the trim pieces in to cover the slot.
