I know that some people tend to think of them as replacements FOR seatbelts, and that is why the US airbags were bigger and more powerful than the European counterparts. Also, BMW recomend an inspection of the SRS system at 100K miles. However, I don't think they are replacing the bags as much as just checking the connections and circuitry. I also wonder that if I DO replace the bag if there is a build date on them?

Jim,
Air bags are called supplemental because they are additional protection above and beyond seat belts, not protection instead of seat belts.
Personally I feel better knowing they are there for me AND my passenger.
It's also interesting that Volvo recommends replacing the airbags as a preventive maintenance item after so many years.
What is BMW's recommendation?
