Earlier this week my temp gauge started to take much longer than normal to get to temp.
Thanks to GregT and Fedde, I was able to quickly diagnose it as a thermostat problem.
I changed it this weekend and found it was broken in half!
I checked with some other BMW series owners and found this is not uncommon.
So, if your car takes a long time to warm up, your thermostat may look like this.
Any suggestions on how to completely drain the coolant from the engine?
I only can get out 1 gallon at a time using the procedure in the factory service manual, and I know there are 4 gallons in there.
JamesVery interesting. Do you suppose this is a defect in the thermostat maufacturing or something normal due to metal fatigue after years of use? I've owned over 30 cars and have never seen this before.
Neal
