Like most things in any car that go wrong. It's a weak point that goes, and the weak points are so evenly distributed among the whole of parts that it keeps us all jumping. The only time you can get a heads up is when it is a notoriously weak link such as the intake manifold gaskets or the leaky gas lines or the OBC lights etc. etc. Cars are meant to confuse and dumfound and keep up all happy trying to figure it all out.

It appears to be normal metal fatigue.
The brass is actually fractured in 3 places, only 1 fracture caused the failure.
Maybe it is planed obsolecence by BMW.
The thermostat had been replaced once before under warranty by the previous owner.
