I bought my 840ci from the same dealership. Both my cars are serviced there. My 525i was in for service when your 850 was brought in for the catalytic converter replacement. I saw the car when it first appeared at the dealership...it is flawless. The sales person told me that there were three people who had put down a deposit on the car. I guess you are the lucky one! CONGRATULATIONS!

I think we share the same master technician at the dealership. Kim Catalano is the most knowledgeable, helpful and thorough of all the technicians that I have ever worked with. I specifically ask for him when I take my 8series in for service. You definitely are in good hands!

If you live in the Charlotte area, we should get together sometime. Maybe we can work on an 8series gathering in the Carolinas!

First thanks to all of you, I asked for advice about a sivler 96 850 about 2 weeks ago. I bought the car from Hendrick BMW in Charlotte, NC. I told the used car sales manager that I had some concerns about buying rare car without having it checked over by an outside source. He understood and offered to do whatever it took to make me happy. That impressed me. He then offered to have his top mechanic go over the car and talk with me about it. I agreed and told the mechanic to go through it "like it was your car." He did and found some things that weren't caught the first time. Bottom line: the dealer is installing a new catalytic converter, air freighted directly from Germany, has recalibrated the steering box, rebalanced improperly balanced new tires and done some other things, all without charge to me. We hear a lot about bad dealers, I thought it only fair to highlight one dealer that is trying to do the right thing. I have no connection with this dealer, except that this is the third car I'm buying from him.

MORE PRAISE FOR HENDRICK.

I have been taking my '93 850 to Hendrick for service since I bought it in July of '95. I did not buy the car from Hendrick, even though they were the selling dealer. I have had nothing but good experiences with them. Whenever I take the car in, if even for an oil change, they always have a loaner for me to drive. On two occasions when work was not done correctly they picked up the car from me,leaving me a new 7-Series to drive, took the car back and corrected the situation, then delivered it back to me.

One example will suffice to describe the sort of dealership Hendrick operates. Last Spring on the way to Augusta for the Masters I spent the night in Charlotte. When I got ready to leave on Thursday morning, I had the Full Monte -- warning lights, "Transmissiom Mode Failure", chimes, "Limp-Home Mode" -- running on one cylinder bank only. I got a towing service to take me and the car out to Hendrick, figuring that since there was no appointment or notice I'd probably have to spend most of the day messing with the service people, renting a car etc, and miss the first day of the tournament. Well, we all arrived out at the dealership about 9:15am, and by 10am I was in a brand-new 5 Series loaner headed for Augusta for the weekend. They called me the next morning to tell me the problem was a fuel pump, and they would have it fixed and ready for me when I got back on Monday. Which they did.

Now gentlemen, that's service. And it's incidents like this that cause me to grit my teeth every time I see on this forum flip references to "stealers" instead of dealers. Now, over the years I may have paid a bit more having the car serviced by Hendrick than I would have if I'd jumped from place to place to save a couple of bucks each time the car needed service. But during the time I've been going there I've gotten to know the service people, and they've gotten to know me and the car. And they've given me a number of breaks beside the somewhat extraordinary situation I've recounted above. Such as on a couple of occasions replacing without charge the infamous self-destructing window seals even though the year's warranty on the part has expired.

So I recommend them without hesitation. My Service Advisor was Quentin Boatwright, who I would also recommend without hesitation but for the fact that a couple of months ago he moved across the parking lot to become Service manager for Hendrick Porsche.
