The linkage went south on my '95 840 once... cost me about 25USD and was easy to replace. The linkage goes from a driver side headlight (behind the headlight is an actuator for the cruise) to the throttle body. That cable can dislocate, ripped of by the radiator fan (very close) and also the unit itself could go wrong.
I'd check the cable and then test the unit.
