Uh, I take it the new steering wheel doesn't have an airbag. The controller passes a very small current thru the airbag circuit on startup to ensure there's electrical continuity through the initiator (a sodium azide blasting cap, if you will). If the bag is disconnected, or the resistance is different, the controller assumes a fault and sets the SRS light.

Man, there's one thing that scares the daylights outta me in the E31, and that's the airbag system. No way do I mess with that thing. Plus, here in the states, if you deliberately mess with the airbag system and then have the misfortune of having an accident, your medical coverage may be at risk. My policy states in effect "safety systems must remain intact" for coverage to remain in force. After decades of lobbying for these things, the insurance industry is intent on making sure they remain operating.

Must be a nice wheel, though, huh? I hate the big black monster I have.
