Thanks Willis,
I just filed this away in my growing file.

I just finished fixing my cruise control. I posted a message last week saying it had stopped working and asked for any ideas. Anyway it was the actuator control. There is a strap that winds around a drum which is controlled by a stepper motor. The strap is attached to the cable which actuates the trottle. The strap had come loose from the drum. I had to take the actuator apart to fix it but it was a relatively easy job (not for the faint hearted though). The only part number in the BMW parts CD is the complete actuator so I guess I saved myself a fair amount of money.
