Try another dealer; the one I purchased mine from gave me this information, and encouraged me to contact the prior owner. The local dealer with whom I regularly hob-nob gave me similar information about my 6er when I bought it -- and I didn't buy it from them. Some dealers are just friendlier than others. Plus, there is absolutely no privacy issue with regard to the cars service history, so if they won't give you that, I'd be worried.
Also, while Carfax won't give you the names, at least you'll have the number of prior owners and an indication of where they were located. I still have about a month left on my three month subscription, so if you give me the VIN, I can run it for you.

I'm considering to purchase a '92 850i from a dealer. I asked the dealer to provide me with the ownership history and they claim that they can't due to privacy considerations. Can any of you advise me on how I can find out as much as possible about this 850's heredity before I proceed with purchase? I'm looking for the following info: Names and contact info of previous owners; Full service and warranty history; and any other info that one should have before making an investment of this type. Thanks... - John
