> This car has a very strange history. I’m not surprised that the dealer didn’t want or was unable to describe its history. I’ll take a guess at what this all means….

01/25/1993 Georgia Title or registration
Motor Vehicle Dept. issued
Birmingham, AL
Title #25160971

> The car was originally registered in Georgia in Jan.’93 – probably sold by a dealer in Alabama. There is no mileage given, so the car could quite possibly have been imported with miles on it, since the car is listed as a ’92. You could check the plate on the left door to find out the actual date of manufacture.

05/13/1997 Ohio Title issued
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Chagrin Falls, OH
Title #1802168790

> This owner had it for a little over 4 years. Probably traded or sold it to a dealer in Ohio. If you look down the following two entries, it was re-titled 3 times in 10 days and had about 500 miles placed on it. One guess is that the dealer that initially took the car in trade immediately sold it to another dealer or collector or ???? and that party sold it to the next owner. However, there’s no guarantee that the titles and the car went with each other – e.g., the car could have been damaged/totaled and the title moved. Really hard to tell. And it would take a whale of a lot of research to find out the real story.

05/15/1997 30,109 Ohio Title issued
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Chagrin Falls, OH
Title #1802168790

05/23/1997 31,498 Ohio Title issued
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Cleveland, OH
Title #1802187687

05/27/1997 33,000 Ohio Passed emissions inspection
Inspection Station

08/14/1997 36,100 Ohio Title issued
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Cleveland, OH
Title #1802313774

> It appears this owner had it for only 3 months and sold it or traded it. Why?

01/17/1998 37,000 Ohio Passed emissions inspection
Inspection Station

> Four months later, the car was transferred (sold, traded, ???) AGAIN. Wow! A real hot potato. With only a little over 2K miles put on it.

05/27/1999 Ohio Title issued
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Chesterland, OH
Title #2800193629

06/10/1999 39,803 Ohio Title issued
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Cleveland, OH
Title #1803257182

> Now the car was sold at auction. This is typically what dealers do when they take a car in trade and don’t want to keep it themselves. Or (and this is the frightening part) it is bought/sold at auction by a junk yard. Just cannot tell. They “auction” it to another dealer or other 3rd party. Anyway, here ends its storied life in Ohio and ends up in PA.

06/24/1999 Auto Auction Sold at auction
Eastern Region

07/22/1999 39,885 Pennsylvania Title or registration
Motor Vehicle Dept. issued
Manheim, PA
Title #53531055 01 MA

> Two months later its sold at auction again and ends up in Maryland.

09/16/1999 39,911 Auto Auction Sold at auction
Eastern Region

09/25/1999 39,916 Auto Inventory Offered for sale
Silver Spring, MD at dealership

> Looks like the Maryland dealer sold it to someone in Virginia in Oct ’99. It had about 40K miles on at the time.

10/12/1999 Virginia Passed emissions inspection
Inspection Station
10/18/1999 39,954 Virginia Title or registration
Motor Vehicle Dept. issued
Title #62703740

> So, that’s the last title on record. It appears that owner had it until recently (about 18 months), and has traded it to a dealer (you’re initial posting indicated you were attempting to buy this car from a dealer…). How many miles does it have on it now?

My opinion, for what it’s worth… I wouldn’t touch this car with a 10 foot pole, even if the pole came with a 50 foot extension. Way too much history. Find yourself a nice one or two owner car where you know the people you’re dealing with – there are many of them out there.
