Mine did that, and it turned out to be a cracked heater valve. The heater valve sits between the fuse box and the air intake that holds the microfilter. That valve is made of the same plastic stuff as the radiator, and it is subject to crumbling just like the plastic portion of the radiator.

It could also be the hoses into the heater core, but I was surprised at the excellent condition of the hoses under the conditions that caused the heater valve to crack. I replaced everything back there.
