280HP on paper but as we all know these cars make around 310HP but the limit in Japan is 280HP. The latest RX7 easily made over 350HP but the Japanese version was limited to 280HP. You can not sell a vehicle with more then 280HP unless pay a hefty fee so nobody does. All of them do 280HP in Japan. 300ZX did 305HP in US version and with a little twist did over 350HP also !
So to answer your question a stock simple Subaru faster then a BMW ? It depends, BMW makes a 318d BMW with 90HP and auto tranny. Sure the Subaru Impreza with a 2.0l engine can be faster w/o turbo or anything. I think Kaya was referring to the Subaru we US residents don't get to see ! Wait 2 years and Subaru will bring the WRC and all the high performance modells. Nissan will import the new Sylvia, Mazda promising a 323AWD turbo, Toyota also doing the Celica AWD Turbo, so very soon the M3 will have a whole bunch of enemies !
