One problem with your theory - competition.
There are several other very decent, highly depreciated cars out there far more rare than an E31, and even they're getting clobbered in the market. For example - 1993 thru 1995 Porsche 928GTS. Only 240 imported into the States, IIRC. Faster, rarer, and possibly more reliable than the E31, and they're still around $40K USD. Also, full documentation is available, and Porsche supports their products even after they go out of production.
The Mercedes 600 coupe and convertable are dropping FAST thru $50K and into the 40s. While the Benz might not be your idea of a performance car, they're certainly very acceptable high speed tourers, exclusive, and FAST. Also, arguably more reliable.
You're not only competing with other E31s, but a slew of other fine German and Japanese automobiles. I'm amazed E31 prices are holding up as well as they have been. I'd expect a free fall by now.
As for creating "interest" on the part of BMW - forget it. The whole firm has a collective amnesia regarding the entire E31 product line.
