You are on-base with the lineup of the e31's competetion, but consider the following:
It is common knowledge that the 928 was complicated and unreliable.
It is, as you point out, common knowledge that the Merc's are more reliable than the BMW's.
The discussion about German vs Japanese has come up here before, and I thought that it was settled that somebody who was interested in an e31 does not find a Japanese equivalent to the e31. (Maybe Lexus SC or Toyota Supra?) But many e31 guys do own Japanese econo-boxes as second-hand cheap and reliable transportation.
Lastly, we can't expect BMW to generate any interest in the form of P.R. or marketing because it's a discontinued model. They aren't going to throw valuable advertising dollars at a product that they can't make any more of. It's just business...nothing more...nothing less. Other than providing us with parts and service, we don't want BMW to dwell on the past, we want them to use their resources to design more cool cars.

Opinion tempered with diplomacy gets the point across better.
