This is a good one, a lower (higher ratio) gear will actually be more gentle on components upstream of the differential such as the trans but harder on the axles etc,. Try to visualize a theoretical ratio of a hundred to one, the driveshaft could almost spin freely while the axles would be compelled to turn whether they want to or not.
