Lez,

The two light bars on the front bumper of the car have 3 bulbs each – working from the center of the hood outward there are the FTP’s (halogen), the DRL’s (which are not used by default in the US, but do come with a dual element bulb), and the parking/blinker light that bends around the bumper.

Normal US operation for the light bar is as follows:

The halogen is strictly a flash to pass, which only works when the lights are switched off. Switch the lights on and the high beams are used for the FTP function.

The dual element (5w/21w) bulb is only used as a 5w light when the parking lights are on. They also stay on with the headlights.

The parking light is academic.

I have modified the halogen lights to illuminate with the fog lights. In this configuration they still operate as FTP’s during the day, and they go off with the high beams, keeping law enforcement happy.

The dual element bulbs have been modified to operate as DRL’s @ 21w when the headlights are off. They stay on for FTP operation of the halogen lights. When the headlights are activated the 21w element is switched off and the 5w element is activated. It is this 5w element that is on with the headlights on all US cars. This switching between 5w & 21w elements is the default operation for countries like Canada where it’s mandatory to have DRL’s. I followed the default Canadian model to (again) make a more plasuable argument to a cop. You can short the contacts on the bulb to activate both elements with the headlights (giving you a brighter 26w at night), but this is a separate function than having DRL’s.

I did not quite follow what you were attempting to say in your response, but I hope this clears things up.

Len

the high beam lights are designed for this right ? I have seen a conversion to DRL with 35W bulbs but what does yours do ? Turn on with a foglights ? Have you used a fog lights ? I have never turned them on... My 100W bulbs satisfy my completely. Most people complained that they are too strong, they just serve me good !
I also have a 26W bulbs in a small lights in the illumination panel and they are good extra at daytime in a rain and every other time the big lights stays off
