I've hed the same problem twice with the onboard display on my '93 850. Each time the dealer replaced the LED display unit (I'm not sure of the correct to fix it. I don't know the cost because it was done under the extended warranty.

Aloha - my name is Alan,
New to the membership and a new owner of a '91 850i.
Car has less than 48K mls. and the folloing problems.
The onboard "CPU" display does not allways light up with all the little red/orange led's. Please forgive the lack of correct nomenclature but will learn in time. If I run muy finger over the display it lights up where the finger is touching. Some times the display is crystal clear and all led's work. Other times only about 50% come on.
Help!. Maui is not the place to get the best tech. help.
Second problem is before shipping the car from the mainland - I took it for a pre-purchase run.
Noted that up to about 120MPH car was a smooth and very comfortable.
Pushing 130 a little vibration and 140 become very noticeable.
Did not dare go beyond - and it appeared to be rear end vibration.
However I made the deal - as there are no roads here on Maui I would dare to drive at those speeds and felt this could be tire, rim or drive axel universals.
Any pointers.
