I kept the original bulbs, and have adjusted the aim so it covers (roughly) the same area as the fogs - well below eye level of oncoming traffic (I hope - next time I see a board member I'll ask them to check for me by each of us driving towards each other).

I installed a single connector bulb (21W) into that standard light bulb and every time I take off I turn on the lights but only the first position so the headlight stays put.
This is enough brighness most of the time in Florida daytime even in heavy rain. At night, the whole headlight comes up with 85W low beam, 85W foglights or 100W high beam !

but your solution sounds interesting, the only problem - the halogen FTP light seems very bright for regular driving ! Did you put 35W bulbs or kept the 55W ? I once installed a 35W H1 and tried to use it as DRL and it was oke, but I sold that car.
