This is what we call a free-market economy, Spector. That means that buyers and sellers meet and exchange goods at a price that is agreeable to both.

It's obvious from the tone of your post that the current equilibrium (price) is beyond what you consider to be fair. But being fair just doesn't matter. Let's face it, the price of real estate, tooth picks, and - yes - BMW's all works by the same guiding principle: Perceived value - Adam Smith's "invisible hand".

Perhaps the dealer *is* taking advantage of the situation and they will pay for that by reducing the goodwill, or reputation, that they enjoy in the marketplace. Your email proves this. However, that is their decision - not yours. The bottom line is that if you don't agree with the value proposition being offered, don't buy it!

Personally? I wouldn't pay that kind of premium either. But then again, I don't want an M3, an M5, or a Z8. My (not so) invisible hand would much rather be wrapped around the steering wheel of an Aston Martin, Ferrari, or Lamborghini.

In the meantime - - until A/M's are under US$40k, I'll be perfectly happy with my antiquated and oh so *very slow* 850. Maybe the three of us - you, Adam, and I - can go for a spin in my 850 sometime. Sorry to say, though - - - you'll have to ride in the back. :-) Cheers... - John

Whatever you do, do not buy any BMW at this dealership. What give them the right to think that they are the only BMW dealer around? $15K over sticker for an E46 M3, $25k over for M5, and $100k over for Z8 is just insane!!! You got to be an idiot to pay this much!!! In fact, there was a sale rep there named Richard was just right out rude and snobby. If they charge this much over for the above, you know that they'll be over charging for all other model line-up. Make sure to do your homework and call around before buying you car.

P.S.
BMW dealers in Irvine, Long Beach, and Buena Park are all owned by the same owner. You should boycott these dealers if you are in the Southern California area. There are 30 BMW dealers in this area and a bunch more out of state.
