He then asked me if I'd ever had a serious collision in my 8 - thankfully I was able to tell him that my machine had never been involved in an accident. He sort of grinned and asked if I was confident that the 'serious crash ' response system would work if it was ever needed. I guess I looked a bit blank so he asked me if I had my Owners Manual on board. I did and we looked at page 26 where it states that in the event of a serious crash the Central Locking System would unlock all the doors, the Hazard Warning Flashers would activate and all the Interior Lights would come on. Well, I now know there is a procedure to test this system.
To run the DFA Test (he said it was Destrukt 'something' Alles - didn't understand exactly) :
1. the key must be in the accessory (#2) position
2. while sitting in the car lock all doors using the central locking button
3. be sure all interior lights are off
4. the transmission (auto or manual) must be any gear OTHER than neutral, reverse or park
5. now depress the brake pedal 5 times (quickly and firmly)
6. immediately push in the turn signal stalk
7. all the interior lights should come on, the hazard warning flashers should activate and the doors should unlock.
8. the OBC readout should display "DFA - - A" (DFA Active??)
Anyway, it works on my Canadian spec '93 850Ci - just one more hidden feature on our (very) complex machines.
