The research I have done certainly backs up this point with 'typical' headlight lenses, which is usually accommodated with a bulb reflector or beam cut-off piece attached atop the bulb, and further many require an autoleveling feature.

Supposedly, our projector type lenses (even in US cars)take care of 90% of the light focus and beam pattern, but don't have the autoleveling (based on varying weight in the vehicle)feature, which would make them technically DOT unapproved. From the Phoenix MicroLite rep I talked with, he would recommend certain discipline concerning the adjustments, and be sensitive (i.e. careful) when changing the loads carried, compared to the adjustments of the light heights.
