here is what I did about 10 times :
purchased a conversion kit for about $29.99
it contains a low pressure and high pressure valve a refiller tool a can of oil+freon and 3 can of freon.
I made sure the old stuff is out by a professional so they can recycle it or it leaked the whole stuff out. Fix the leak (gaskets are usually 1-2USD items) then have it vacuumed ! It is good to do and advisable but not 100% neccessary, I've done a few w/o vacuuming !
replace the valves. Connect the refill hose and start a car. Put the A/C to maximum cold and maximum fan speed. Connect the oil+freon to the refill tool and start the refill process. Shake the can while you refilling. Once it is empty, close the cap, change to a new can and repeat. 3 and a half can is usually enough for a regular car. You have an R134 system in your car in less then 30 minutes out of 30USD + vacuuming usually 10-15USD at the local stealer/AC specialist

I've done A/C repairs a million times, it is easy just have to follow the rules.
good luck !
