I know it may sound silly but not too long agoo I read it somewhere the RedLine Synthetic oil can do a magic work on those shot synchros. They (editor) had a same problem and simply replaced the oil to a Redline synth and the grinding went away !
So if I may suggest this - replace the transmission oil with redline Synthetic manual transmission spec oil and replace the throw out bearing (smaller job then tranny rebuilt !!!) and see what happens ! Worst case - you really have to rebuild it ! I'd do it as many times the problem isn't exactly as it seems. I agree with others here, the 1st and 2nd gear is usually the trouble but I had an old Fiat X1/9 which 4 spd tarnny was fine except the 3rd gear synchro. SO it isn't 100% that 1st and 2nd synchro goes south first !
Change the oil and bearing and post us the result ! I'd like to know what happens, if the redline is really that good or it is an urban legend only.
