Also Stan & Randy,
It is highly suspicious when someone, especially a professional mechanic or service adviser, tell you that you need a new engine 'when they haven't even performed a compression or leak-down test! The best mechanic in the world can only guess about such things without a compression leak-down test. These guys were obviously looking for business. However, that said, if you really want to know the true condition of your engine combusion area, do the leakdown test and you will know for sure if you have a problem or not.
Good Luck, Kurt
Randy,
If you do have a ring blow-by and oil leak from that, you'll have a (probably noticable) loss of power or a rough running cylinder. Going to the proper higher viscosity oil will either keep everything the same (if you really don't have a problem) or give you your original power back (if you did have a minor leak). If you have a noticable power loss even after the oil change, then you may have to continue the diagnostics, as it could be serious (or it could be minor!).
P.S. please turn off your CAP-LOCK, no need to shout, we're all close by here. :-)
