I sold many cars and many times the buyer requested a mechnic quick check. I always agreed and many times what happend ? He just heard of a guy who has a better car for sale and probably even better then this, but definietly cheaper and better taken care of !
The shops are dealing with a lot of people and they always have a car for sale from a friend, a customer, etc and since they make money on these, they will recommend that car instead of yours !
Also I had a car that was anything but good, had terrible repaint (very common here) and leaked at the door, but the car was cheap and had beutiful wheels, 76k miles at 4 y/o and had a good overall look. We took it to the "family mechanic" who opened a hood, took one eye on the car, quickly closed it, and asked me how much are you asking ? When he heard the price, he shot the hood, and said to him, go ahead and buy it !
that was it and he left. He wanted a car that he can make money too !
If I sell an expensive car instead of telling the buyer-to-be to take it to here or there, I take the car to a dealer for a complete check and tell the custumer the phone number of the dealer, so he can talk to them. If there is something wrong, we ask the dealer for an estimate and work on a deal. If the car worth the money and looks good, the buyer will take it, because he will feel confident. I also plan on the dealers, they service adviser will give this check-up job to the newest guy (the least experienced) because it isn't a good paying job and he can't screw up things. So most of the time, they will not find hidden problems. I think if he wants to sell a car, he should have a car checked by the dealer (cost is about 150USD) and put the carfax report (14.95) and a dealer report toghether next to a car. Even if there is some problem, let's say a 2,000 repair is needed, when a buyer see the list of the problems, he/she will know what to expect ! He/she might thinks there is a 6,000USd repair ! So by telling the truth you can actually gain some business ! Also the car is priced very low, even if there is a 2k repair bill, the car below market value! I think it is a steal if the car is oke.
But that's my policy and in the car business very few people are trying to be honest ! This business for same reason brings all the scumbags, and they try to rape you with their junks. I haven't purchased a car directly from a dealership besides my leasing vehicles. That was also a painful experience. He had no idea about the customer, cars, just wanted to close the deal. He was fired 2 weeks later ! Not because of me, but I didn't say nice things about him either !well, that enough for today by everyone,
